Re: THIS PROJECT
THE COMPOSER'S NOTES
Rebeca is a hell of a writer. I'd already read her novella when she approached me interested in getting an audio book crafted. And I say 'crafted' because it's a nice and fancy word. For a nice and fancy audio book. It's not pretentious; it's fancy. Anyway, I was thrilled.
I was also a little terrified, as to that point I'd neither recorded nor produced an audio book...or really any audio file longer than a few minutes. Two-and-a-half hours was—ambitious.
One of the tricky bits I ran into working on this project was the difficulty in maintaining context. If you struggle with the ADHD symptoms, as I do, it is easy to get lost in thought while reading and accidentally gloss over a sentence or two. This presents a problem when there are memory flashbacks throughout the story—flashbacks that jump several centuries. In a book, quickly skimming back to re-establish context is a simple enough task, but that's not the case with audio. Which is why I approached Rebeca with the idea of adding musical cues to more easily establish where across time the reader is landing when such a flashback occurs.
This project took a great deal of effort, but it was incredibly rewarding and I'm pleased with the end result. I'm always pretty pumped to get to explore new territory.
I look forward to working with Rebeca on many more future projects.
